About David Baas

I’m going to do my about page in the first person, because well, I’m me. I’m also well aware the accompanying picture of me is not great, because firstly, I’m not that photogenic, and secondly, it’s hard to point the good camera at myself. I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

My education and career are actually in the world of animation. And, like so many people during COVID lock-down, I discovered a new hobby, hence this photography page.

While I was remotely directing an animated television show, I started watching and feeding birds I saw out the window. I became more and more fascinated with them and decided to rent a fancy camera one weekend to see how interested I really was.

So, it turns out I was pretty interested in taking pictures of birds and other things. Lots of my friends began to annoy me by telling me things like, “your pictures are so good”, or ,”you should be trying to exhibit or sell these.”

So over time, my pleasant, solitary hobby has been ruined by being in a couple of local exhibitions, winning a couple of awards, and selling a couple of pieces.

Now, you can share in the administrative misery it took to create this website and buy a picture (especially, if you’re one of those people that goaded into putting them up for sale). This would also help me pay off the lease for the fancy camera and lenses that I don’t want to give back.

I’m not going to make some philosophical artist statement because those are often pretentious and lame. So just have a look at some birds, some experimental fireworks photography, and other stuff. Click on a picture in any of the galleries, let me know what you want, and I’ll figure out how to get it to you. If you don’t buy anything, I can only hope that scrolling through the website has been a pleasant distraction for you.
